In Canada, as well as in all host countries, AFS offers an emergency telephone line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Emergency telephone lines
  • During office hours, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (Eastern Standard Time):
    (514) 288-3282 or 1-800-361-7248
  • After hours, call collect:
    (514) 575-5084

This last number puts you in touch with an employee of the AFS office in Montreal. When calling about an emergency situation, please provide the student’s name, your name and telephone number, and the reason for your call, stating the degree of urgency. If you need to leave a message, someone should call you back within 30 minutes. If not, please call the emergency service again.

Your child is abroad

In the event of political crises, natural disasters, or any other emergency affecting the host country, AFS will immediately contact all students in the country to ensure that they are safe.

If we believe the evacuation is necessary, we will either move the students to another country or bring them back to Canada. Placement in a second country will be considered; depending on the number of months remaining in the program and only if there is another foster family available in this new country.
