Living with a host family and attending a local school in Peru will give you the opportunity to really get to know this ancient and diverse culture, from the modern metropolis of Lima to the ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu. At school you’ll meet new people and learn lots of new things, and in your spare time you’ll hang out with your host family.

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must be aged between 15 – 17,6 years old on the day on departure.

The AFS Program

After your host parents greet you with traditional hospitality, it shouldn’t be long before you feel at home in their open, friendly community. By going to a local high school, you’ll be totally immersed in a new language and customs, and what you learn during the day will be reinforced at night when you spend time with your host family. This is your chance to break out of your comfort zone and join in this diverse and ever-evolving culture.

Your high school

The school year starts on March and ends in December, with a 14 days vacation in July/August due to National Holidays.  In private schools a week off is scheduled between bimonthly academic period. Classes go from Monday to Friday from 8:00  to  15:00 . Based on your interests, the AFS Local Chapter and your School Advisor will help you to use your time in optional activities such as learning dances, or practicing sports. There may be a small fee that will be under your responsibility.

The Peruvian academic system is organized in a way that you will have the same classmates through the school year and the same schedule as well, since students cannot make up their own. The subjects applied are: Spanish Literature, Math, English, Peruvian History, Civics, Political, Economy, Psychology, Handicrafts, Arts, Philosophy, Religion, Physical Education, Chemistry/Physics.

Returning Home

“Life-changing” is hard to describe, yet it’s nearly always the first thing that AFSers say when asked about their experience abroad.
“Transformed” is another one. When you return home, if you’re like most AFSers, you’ll bring with you a sense of accomplishment unlike any other. You’ll have gained maturity and independence, discovered new passions, and feel like you can do anything you set your mind to. That transformation isn’t visible only to you, though – others see it as well. AFSers gain critical skills for college and careers, ranging from language fluency to intercultural competence and critical reasoning. “Life-changing” means it’s only the beginning.
