{"id":1901,"date":"2016-09-29T14:01:02","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T14:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/canada.afssite.afs.org\/?p=1901"},"modified":"2016-10-03T20:21:53","modified_gmt":"2016-10-03T20:21:53","slug":"afs-builds-sustainable-partnerships-with-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.afscanada.org\/en\/2016\/09\/29\/afs-builds-sustainable-partnerships-with-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"AFS builds sustainable partnerships with schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">\n<p id=\"b554\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Teachers and educators have long been an integral part of AFS\u2019s secondary school intercultural exchange programs and we have always highly appreciated the placement and support that schools give to our exchange students. To further improve our ongoing and important collaboration with the formal education sector, in early 2015, a new\u00a0<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">AFS Educator and School Relations Project<\/em><\/span>\u00a0was launched and is underway today.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0cf7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The aim of this training and outreach initiative is to help AFS member organizations around the world\u00a0<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">find mutually beneficial ways to truly serve and collaborate with educators and schools<\/span>. This new and comprehensive approach works with the educational community as a whole and includes both local and institutional levels. It improves how relationships between AFS and educators are built and maintained while also reinforcing AFS\u2019s own role as a (non-formal) educational organization.<\/p>\n<p id=\"16ac\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">The highlight of the project is the\u00a0<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">AFS Educator &amp; School Relations Handbook<\/em><\/span><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">.<\/em>\u00a0An important new resource for AFS school and educator liaison volunteers and staff, the handbook assembles successful and new practices alike, and presents key learnings and insights from those AFS organizations who already have particularly strong relationships with schools in their countries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4d8f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It provides helpful guidelines and shares tools to help AFS organizations build sustainable partnerships that serve the needs of rapidly changing schools and at the same time enhance both the quality of AFS exchange programs and the abilities of schools to\u00a0<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">support the intercultural competence development of not only exchange program participants, but all students in their classrooms<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"32d1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The handbook has been developed with the support of a group of 10 experts and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, from within and outside of AFS \u2014 including, of course teachers and other formal educators!<\/p>\n<p id=\"1b6f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Both a strategic document and a collection of hands-on and practical tools, the handbook features real-life experiences from AFS organizations around the world, plus templates and reference materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"50d6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It is organized in four areas:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"971a\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Framework for Educator &amp; School Relations in AFS<\/li>\n<li id=\"6d54\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">The Educator &amp; School Relations Action Plan<\/li>\n<li id=\"a425\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">School Relations Toolkit<\/li>\n<li id=\"e77f\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Institutional Relations Toolkit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"afdd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">and will be released in early 2016.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2dff\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">In the meantime, within the global AFS community, we have established a core group of\u00a0<span class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Educator &amp; School Relations Responsibles<\/em><\/span>\u00a0. These highly motivated staff members work with local and national educational communities, and serve as a contact point for communications on this subject for and across AFS.
