Introduction to International Development Program
AFS sends many groups on short-term programs to help communities in need, especially in Latin America. Most of the volunteer work is achieved in local primary schools. The group works together on a specific project and each participant lives with a local family. This program offers participants an introduction to international development work while extending the opportunity to increase familiarity with a new culture and to learn a new language. Projects vary according to the needs of the local communities. Length, departure dates and destinations are flexible.
Here are some examples of past projects:
- AFS participants helped restore a roof in a school so that the temperature would not get too hot in the classrooms in the afternoon. Children in this community can now attend school all day.
- Participants assisted in restoration work such as painting the walls of a small school and building shelves, to improve functionality and aesthetics.
- AFS students participated in building an extra classroom for a school in a small village to enable more children in the community to attend school.
School Exchange Program
AFS Interculture Canada offers the possibility to twin a Canadian school with a school abroad for a reciprocal exchange program.
