6/10/2009 - $7,000 Scholarship to Hiroshima!

A unique opportunity! Become a Peace Ambassador!


Thanks to a generous contribution from the City of Hiroshima, AFS Interculture Canada will grant a ¥ 600,000 ($6,800 CAN) scholarship for a School Year AFS program with a Japanese host family, from March 24, 2010, until February 5, 2011.


Hiroshoma is internationally renowned as a city of peace. It is to promote World Peace that the City offers 16 scholarships to students around the world, one of which for a Canadian student.


Eligibility requirements:

  • To be born between April 2, 1992, and April 1, 1995.
  • To have successfully completed at least nine years of continuous study.
  • To have at least a basic knowledge of English.
  • To accept to live in Hiroshima for the duration of the program and to develop knowledge of themes related to Peace.
  • To demonstrate a remarkable or outstanding motivation for studies.
  • To write an essay in English answering the question: “How can I get the best out of my AFS experience in Hiroshima.”
  • To write two reports during your stay.
  • To be in excellent health.
  • To participate in the activities organized by the City of Hiroshima and AFS local volunteer chapter.
  • To have paid the $75 preliminary application fee and the $750 registration fees. The registration fees are reimbursed if the participant could not be accepted in the program due to high demand.
  • To commit to engage in the required AFS fundraising.

Application Process

  • Register in the Japan AFS program and complete your application – including your medical exams – by September 15, 2009, 23h59 Eastern time.
  • Submit a letter of intent in English explaining why you should be selected as a representative for Canada as a Peace Ambassador.
  • Get two letters of recommendation to support your application.
  • AFS will announce the winner of the scholarship during the first week of November 2009.

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the letter of intent
  • Quality of the essay
  • Academic profile
  • Capacity to demonstrate interest in World Peace development and motivation for the program.
